If your radiators have cold patches, your boiler is noisy or your heating takes an age to warm up, sludge in the system is the usual suspect. A powerflush clears that sludge out, but it is not always the right answer, and prices vary widely. Here is what homeowners in Stoke-on-Trent should actually know before booking one.
Over the years, the water inside a central heating system reacts with the steel in radiators and produces magnetite, a black iron oxide sludge. It settles in the bottom of radiators, clogs pipework and gets dragged through the boiler heat exchanger, which is why sludged systems run inefficiently and boilers fail early.
A powerflush connects a pumping unit to your system, usually across the circulation pump or a radiator, and circulates cleaning chemicals at high velocity through every radiator in turn. The engineer agitates each radiator, reverses the flow to dislodge stubborn deposits, then flushes the dirty water out until it runs clear. It can expose existing weak spots on very corroded radiators or fittings, which is why a good engineer inspects the system first. If yours is fragile, a slower chemical cleanse is often the safer option.
With a magnetic filter fitted and inhibitor levels maintained at annual services, a properly flushed system should stay clean for eight to ten years or more. Without inhibitor, sludge can return within a few years.
